Are you ready for the first day of school?
Backpack full of supplies. Check!
First-day outfit clean and ready to go. Check!
You know where you're going and when to be there. Mostly.
You're in bed, the night before the first day of school, trying to sleep, but it's hard, isn't it? Maybe you're not sure about a new school, a new class, a new teacher. Maybe you got new clothes, but now you aren't quite sure where your shoes are. If you follow the guidelines below, it should help you sleep a little better.
Prepare. Make a list of everything you need to do before the first day of school. It can include getting school supplies (make sure you have the list,) calling friends to talk about schedules or clothes, going to orientation, or whatever is important to you. Check things off the days before school starts, so you feel better about being ready. Lay out clothes the night before, just in case your favorite socks are dirty or a shoe is missing.
Sharpen pencils ahead of time. It may seem like a little thing, but when the teacher tells you to take out a pencil and write your name on the paper, you don't want to have to go stand in line at the pencil sharpener.
Double-check the dress code. Even if it is over ninety degrees and your flip-flops look perfect with your new shorts, you need to check the school dress code. Make sure you know what is allowed and what is not, so that really cool first-day outfit doesn't earn you a trip to the principal's office.
Check the list again. You may have gone through your school supply list a thousand times already, but do it one more time before you leave for school. You may not have noticed that Dad borrowed your ruler or that your little brother dumped your crayon box under your bed. Don't be surprised when you get to school. If there were any school supplies you couldn't find or were sold out, be sure to let your teacher know; she will expect you to have them. Then, remind Mom or Dad to find and buy the supplies. You need them as soon as possible.
Eat breakfast. Even if you're late for school, make sure you grab something to eat. A hungry stomach and first-day nerves are a bad combination, unless you want to be the first one to throw up this year. Grab a portable yogurt, a handful of cereal, a piece of bread and some fruit, but don't take a some candy and a soda. Save that for after school. Breakfast is the perfect way to start the day with energy and a settled stomach.
Hopefully you can sleep better now. Have an awesome school year!
